MOLDOVAN SOCIETY AS COMPLICIT IN THE DEGRADATION OF CULTURE - I

Analysis of political and social evolution in our country shows things sometimes take a curious turn. Again the question of the religious life of the population living on the Prut River left bank is the most provocative. One may have objections to what is presented here, but conducting a thorough research of the recent events helped us drawing the right conclusion.

I should say from the very beginning the majority of personalities expressing publicly their attitude regarding various religious events that took place in rapid succession in our country have no idea what they're talking about. Though gained orthodox majority since the last census the events under discussion do not have that desirable impact on a simple citizen's or countryman's mind. And it's scandalous to allow the blockheads, having no idea even about Liturgy to express publicly their point of view on the scaffold - providing a multitude of resources and information for mass-media write about visible doctrinal aberrations upon Orthodoxy.
As suggested recently, the overwhelming majority of the population: Moldavians who declared their appurtenance to Orthodoxy according to the last year census they do not regularly attend cultic places (church). Only a small part of the whole does it regularly. In response to the consequence of the events some orthodox critics wish to express publicly their opinion regarding the people pretending to be Christians. Nothing is more fallacious calling yourself Christian without any proof!  No investigation has yet been conducted in this regard. Probably, it is the interest of the national demagogues who fear revealing the truth contributing to the development of the impediments to putting their plans into effect.

If you are not indifferent to the amount of people attending the cultic places go to a country church and see how many people come on a feast day to pray the God. You will have difficulty in finding a seat. Church will become overcrowded.

At the same time, the amount of young people attending religious services grew considerably.  Christians" who do not go to church are the mere actors relegating to the political or, in general, to public (mass - media and show business) scene showing their hostile attitude towards the church through their declarations. For instance, Moldovan  Christian",  popular", or  democratic" (the terms suggest a pleonasm when we come across with in the name of one movement) auto - proclaimed forces declared themselves against the Orthodox Church. Religious community surviving during the times of the communist debauchery on expense of numerous human losses seems to be attacked by the other political formation fraudulently mastering the meaning and the difference between above mentioned terms.

Leaders relegating to the public scene very often do not realize what they are talking about; they do not take the responsibility for their own words and understand vaguely the present posture of affairs. The same can be said about post - modernist writers belonging to the last generation: religion has become the school subject enjoying neither theoretical nor practical success during the last fifteen years; religion has also become the instrument for political legitimization. Belief in the  Authentic religious sentiment" generating through  diversification of the religious offers" is another distinctive feature characterizing above mentioned individuals. Thus, there's a widespread belief that Moldovan Orthodox Church estranged the true notion of religious life from the Romanian intellectuality persisting on the left bank of the Prut River and as a result got involved in politics in an inappropriate manner.

profanareSimple concepts of the people in the opposition reflect archaic, outdated thoughts and feelings in their consciousness upon the faith. It is possible to prove, by consulting such periodicals as Jurnal de Chisinau (Chisinau Journal), Timpul (The Times), Saptamina (The Week)) sold at the newsstands of Chisinau and the territory of the entire Moldova.

Another common aberration is the one widely spread during the last decade among influential circles of the Moldovan society believing that the Orthodox Church is a social institution contributing to and hindering the successful practice of the so-called modernization as well as blocking the western standards implementation throughout our country:  Church will never manage to keep up with the times"

This is far from being the case. The Church's adversaries try to politicize the relationship between civil society and hierarchical religious power by resorting to all means and methods helping them put their plans into effect. Having a slight idea of the canonical rules and the Holy Church traditional practices essence, they  acquitted" themselves allowing the virulent attacks against church authorities. Being moved only by their own self-interest, shallow minded adversaries make  good" use of every moment and occasion pursuing only aberrant views.

Unfortunately, very few people can establish order and stability - contributing a brick to the edifice of the authentic Romanian statality. So - called Moldovan intellectuality cares about the scandal and kitsch which are widely available through the yellow press.

On the other hand, fully featured western standards open up a spiritual acute vacuum in the society arising and giving lots of social problems. They would not have that outstanding effect in case we did not keep up the drumbeat by heavily advertising their deeds. It is common knowledge that losses occurring in the situation where everybody is apparently indifferent towards the traditional values of the Romanians as well as the education of our successors do not provide opportunities for great changes. It is practically impossible to witness a change if demagogues wishing the implementation of so-called  values" have no idea what the consequences of those  values" might be, especially in the society which abandoned its Soviet yoke and gained its independence not long ago. More than that! The problem should be examined with the utmost thoroughness and seriousness until somebody did not plunge us into abyss before hand like in a nightmare.

Role of the Orthodox Church in preserving the traditional values

profanarePeople themselves and the church stand guard over the traditional values (that is all people of a country). The journalist's and intellectual's mission is to spread and consolidate the values generated in the soul of the people. What do we observe today? Some shameless scoundrels being beyond the ocean impudently impose their own values appropriate for their own country but at the same time alien for the simple people of our country. Imposing alien values and all sorts of staff they insult simple people and attack the religious values of the latter: movies and songs of low quality or even immoral, inadmissible customs, traditions and values having the negative impact on people's mind (ex. - wealth attained from theft, extortion, forgery, bribery, monopoly, cheating, etc.).

Now, let us speak of a really good part of everything that is happening around us. And not only! Interpretation of the good part shall be made in the way so that it was opposed diametrically to the one made by our parents, grand - parents and great grand - parents. Though, mass - media is not always in a hurry to write and speak about good parts; media's reaction and desire to expose at least few lines can be compared as to mental retardation. Mass - media holds to the same, old opinion affirming that values under discussion (Christian ones) are outdated and should be substituted by some other - new, so-called  human general" (similar to the ones exposed in the text - book |Deprinderi de Viaţă" ( Life - Skills") implemented by schools last year). Analysis shows such values are contradistinguished to Christian ones and are not at all time highs. According to the latter concept  value" means any action or deed helping to attain personal success and comfort. The greater the demand, the more is the value of the actions or deeds helping to attain it. That's all there is to it. Consequences and adverse reactions are not taken into account. In short, foreign values cultivate nothing but vice, egoism and debauchery.

Public acceptance of those manifestations causes a deepening social disease. True freedom becomes libertinage, love transforms into debauchery, strong and volitive public character, formerly contributing to the development of the patriotism - transforms into hatred (giving impulse to committing the crimes), and debauched beauty becomes hideous.  The present posture of affairs will continue persisting until man's soul extirpates everything constituting the essence of his sentiment and be substituted by a coarse sentiment. Man, endowed with peculiar high qualities inherently, will be transformed into the animal.

The same state of affair may play into the hands and be convenient for those wishing to dominate the human minds. To my mind you are aware of the difficult situation persisting during the period of Communist yoke having the continuous negative influence on the population: as for us, for instance, the fight against our traditional Romanian spirituality affected mostly our culture and education.

The Destruction of Memory - Central orthodox Cemetery

aleea plopilorReconstruction of the memorial complex  Eternity" was the result of indeed awkward and numerous discussions and debates in the parliament. The reconstruction of the complex under discussion has begun by the end of the first trimester of the current year in Chisinau. The debates in the legislative body were really contradictory to what was expected presupposing the following principles: Why should we honor the memory of the fallen soldiers during the Second World War -  truly shameful and going beyond the question of all reasonable expectation supposition supported by our legislators  deserving" respectful and dignified treatment.

First Step Made Toward the so-call  reconstruction" was the cutting down of eighty poplar trees at fifty years of age. Some time later, again, some bulldozers were brought on the territory of the central orthodox cemetery to excavate soil, burial place of our ancestors' bones lying in their graves for two centuries. The same mistake was made in 1975. Meanwhile, the events of 1975 will echo for years into the future in the minds of the former students, Class 1975 - 1977. They remind the times when they lived in the youth hostels next to the cemetery holding the remains of our forefathers. They remind the horror of events of mass and planned invasion with bulldozers along the perimeter of the remaining cemetery pushing the bones of the passed in piles later covering them by thousands of layers of sand and silt already on the territory of what is today the memorial of the central cemetery. If one digs the upper layer of the soil one may find even today the bones of the unburied behind the granite walls of the memorial.

Exalting the commemorative cross honoring the soldiers and forefathers buried long ago ran quite contrary to promises. Instead, an obelisk - occult symbol was erected reminding the times when people confronted the Nazis totalitarism. That is why it is useless to speak for the  reconstruction" technical quality (it's as clear as a day) which leaves much to be desired. Present Chisinau memorial looks more like the occult sanctuary than a place honoring ancestors who spilled the very blood for building the new life for their followers.

Thirty - year age interval persisting atheist and bureaucratic mentality is still alive in people's mind gradually transforming into audacity. Startled we witnessed the demolishing of the wall separating the southern side of the memorial from the remaining part of the cemetery built during the soviet times (existing about twenty years). And again bulldozers and excavators were pushing the bones in piles. The whole affair was crowned by the proficient in this field militaries last straw that broke the camel's back by opening the new road providing the link between the Pan Halipa Street and Hincesti roadway.

The event under discussion provokes challenging questions: What is the meaning of the so - called  reconstruction"? The answer is being provided by the expression of the political ambitions different from people's aspirations and hopes.

Forces of all combatant sides fought first of all for Peace; both our grandmothers and grandfathers stood along both sides of the barricade. The fact that our territories were defended by our ancestors is the opposite reflection of fact that our territories were subjected to constant encroachments from the West and the East. Occult signs and symbols (for instance - pentagrams) transformed the territory of the oldest existent cemetery in Chisinau into mockery against the whole nation.

ateismAnnexation of the additional part of the oldest existent cemetery in Chisinau, a direct challenge towards national spirituality is the other reasons to dislike the whole idea about so - called  reconstruction" of the memorial in Chisinau. We are astonished no more by the fact that the Republic of Moldova mass - media does not pay any attention to the existing problem. It seems only demolishing of an edifice thrilled the mind of people working with mass - media; no attention was accorded to the digging of the territory of the cemetery - probably the most challenging problem.

Everybody knows already the cinema |Gaudeamus" occupies the territory of the cemetery in question. Cinema, the hotel, bars, the disco club and the athletic field - all these institutions stand on the tombs of the cemetery. Our ediles are aware of the current state of affairs but they have not done a stroke of work aimed at ameliorating the situation. On the contrary, they want to provide the impression that all of them are the true mankurts. The famous architect Alexander Bernardazzi tomb was demolished and instead substituted by the monument to a debauched overlooking arrogantly the city with his fist stretching up towards the sky. Those who resorted to current transformations did not think demolishing of the idol under discussion meant challenging the prevalent religious beliefs and fight against God.
